5 Mind-Stimulating Language Arts Games
Language is the house of BEING. In its home man dwells. Those who think and those who create with words are the guardians of this home.
-Martin Heidegger
Allowing your children to be silly and have fun is a game-changer for fine-tuning language arts skills. When a child is actively engaged and enjoying themselves there are so many benefits: they won’t realize they’re actually learning, information retention is much greater, and it primes for a harmonious day.
Nursery Rhymes
It’s very simple and lots of fun to read and memorize classic nursery rhymes. Sit together and read from a beautifully illustrated book. You can be as serious or as silly as you like as your child flexes his/her vocal abilities.
Puppet Show
Read a story and let your children’s creativity run wild as they make their own puppets and then put on a show of the story. Or their own variation of that story. My girls always enjoyed the children’s version of Shakespeare plays.
Story Cubes
A roll of the dice will get the imagination and storytelling skills rolling. Because the dice have pictures on the sides, this game is great for all ages. And, who knows, it could devolve into laughter and pure silliness!
Bananagrams
Great spelling practice using a proactive thinking approach. Great for young readers to strengthen their word skills. It’s great for a quick educational break.
Limericks
For older children, limericks are an excellent way to stretch their creativity and story-telling skills to a new level. First, they would understand the structure of a limerick. Then hear some already-written limericks to get into the ‘limerick zone’. Once there, there’s no telling how silly this could get!
